On January 1, 1999, Barbara Eustis-Cross died of cancer, after a long and valiant struggle. Director of the Life Is For Everything Foundation (LIFE) and sitting on the board of the Equine Rescue Network Inc. (ERNI), Barb was a long time and very active advocate of humane treatment for all animals, wild, feral or domestic. She rescued bears, mountain lions, pelicans, sea gulls, mustangs, burros, dogs, cats and anything else that came along. In the course of her work with LIFE, she was asked to help with a wild burro problem, and that was the start of her long and both supportive and critical relationship with the Bureau of Land Management's Wild Horses and Burros program. Barb's family had been horse people for several generations in California, and Barb developed an intense and immediate concern for America's feral equines. Author of the excellent and only existing book of its kind, "The Wild Horse; an Adopter's Manual", Barb was often consulted by the BLM as well as by animal welfare groups on the subject of wild horse and burro management. She worked with Willis Lamm and others on building support for and improving the BLM's adoption program, and LIFE was the co-sponsor of the Wild Horse Workshop '98 held in California, managed by Willis Lamm and considered by all participants, observers and the BLM to be a great success. The Wild Horse Workshops and the Mentor Program developed on the LIFE-sponsored wildhorses mailing list will continue the work that was closest to her heart -- the preservation in the wild as well as a successful adoption program for America's feral horses and burros. Barbara will be missed by many, many people, but the work goes on, work in which Barb found joy, challenge, satisfaction and just plain fun. More personal information and pictures of Barb's life can be found on her Journal pages. |

This was one of Barb's favorites of all the graphics on her web site. She thought it represented the kick-ass part of her personality rather well.
